Dr. Mark McFarland

My primary research area is the music of early-20th century nationalist composers, especially Debussy and Stravinsky.

My secondary area of expertise is the application of Schenkerian analysis to the tonal jazz repertory (the graph below is of Bill Evans’ Peri’s Scope).

I began my studies in music by playing horn, which I did professionally during and after my undergraduate degree. Once I decided to pursue advanced degrees in music theory, I did my graduate studies at both the University of California and L'Université François Rabelais de Tours. I arrived at GSU in 2005 and am currently an associate professor.
